The Avoidance exercise is the final speed manoeuvre in the Module One test. It is necessary to reach the required speed in order to gain a pass. The key to this exercise is practice, as it has a number of elements that you should understand prior to attempting it. It is not a case of have a go and see, you will need to be precise in the way to negotiate this exercise. It is generally accepted that 2nd gear is the best gear to use as it gives good acceleration and engine braking. When exiting the curve, accelerate to 35 mph, then throttle off at the first set of red cones. This transfers weight to the front wheel, which aids steering and results in a speed of 32 mph at the speed camera. It is vital to look between the two blue avoidance cones and not to focus on them. After the avoidance, gently steer back towards the stopping area, lightly applying a little rear brake and then when straight and upright, bring in the front brake to use both brakes. Do not use the front brake whilst still turning! A second attempt is generally allowed if you fail to reach the required speed.
HOW TO CARRY OUT THE AVOIDANCE EXERCISE
Select 1st gear
Carry out rear observations
Ride across the test centre
Select 2nd gear and no more than 20 mph
In curve, position 1 mtr from red cones
Avoid braking and maintain 19 mph in curve
At centre point, look for 2nd cone (as guide)
Turn towards blue cones to exit the circuit
Accelerate to approximately 35 mph
At the first set of red cones, turn the throttle off
Go through speed camera at 32 mph (50 kph)
Swerve through the two blue avoidance cones
Look and steer towards the stopping area
Lightly apply rear brake to slow down
When bike straightens up, apply front brake
Stop between blue cones at end
Select neutral

AVOIDANCE EXERCISE - SPEED REQUIREMENTS
In the circuit: 19 mph (30 kph is an advisory speed requirement)At the speed camera: 32 mph (50 kph) – required, speed assessed with speed camera
