The correct use of stands is an important exercise and is covered in detail when training with a professional motorcycle training provider. The exercise will have been covered when completing a CBT and is covered again during the introduction to the motorcycle on the DAS course. Care must be taken when out on the public road, as the actual road surface may not be as good as the location where you first practiced. Even the best riders have got it wrong and not put the stand down correctly, resulting in a dropped bike. The road camber could be higher or lower than expected and the bike will not sit properly on the stand. In this situation, move the bike instead of taking chances that it will be alright.
During the Module Two test, you will probably only use your motorcycle stands twice, once at the start of the test and again at the end. You should be aware that some riders have failed their Module Two motorcycle test for dropping their bike. This is because they thought the stand was securely down in place and it wasn’t, resulting in the bike falling over. This is an automatic fail, even though it is at the end of the test and up to that point may have been a pass. If the motorcycle only has a main stand, sufficient practice must be given during your training to ensure you are happy and comfortable using it.
