Attitude Towards Learning to Ride a Motorcycle

Having a good attitude is key to learning any new skill. This is especially true when it comes to a new rider’s attitude towards learning to ride a motorcycle.

It is essential to succeed and make progress. Here are some tips on how you can demonstrate a good attitude towards learning to ride a motorcycle.

Take responsibility

The instructor is there to guide you, but ultimately, it’s up to you to take responsibility for your own actions and learning. There is no magic wand that can be waved so that you’ll get it all straight away. This means you should practise what has been taught, ask questions when you aren’t sure and be proactive in your own learning process.

Taking responsibility for your own learning is important. This means taking as much time as possible to cement a skill, find opportunities to practise and improve. Being accountable for your own progress is important too and always seek professional feedback to improve.

Stay focused

Riding a motorcycle requires your full attention. When learning to ride or learning a new skill, it is important to focus on what is being said and then applying that information.

It takes time to develop and it does not always come easy to start with. Stay focused on the lesson or task in hand and don’t let your mind wander while you are riding.

Always avoid distractions when riding on the road. Some people wear earphones and listen to music whilst riding, using the phone can cause distractions too, especially as a new rider. You must remain focused on what you are doing and cannot afford to lose concentration for a split second.

Openness

You should be open to new ideas and approaches, this is important when learning a new skill. It’s essential to be willing to try different things and not be afraid of making mistakes. Not being able to do it the first time is normal, you should not put yourself under pressure to get it right the first time.

Be open minded and acknowledge the fact that you are not going to progress quickly when learning new skills. The openness comes from trying different ways to do things until you find a way that suits you and your riding style. The instructor should be able to give you different ways to think about what you are doing and give feedback to changes that might help.

There is a famous saying that says, there is more than one way to skin a cat!

Persistence

Learning new skills is sometimes about persistence and doing something by rote. Repetition can get boring but it is necessary to set the foundations and to perfect a new sill.

It is said that it takes 21 days to form a habit. You don’t have that long to set a new skill, but you can do something repetitively over and over again to help with muscle memory.

The task might seem hard to start with but as it is practised and understood, it becomes easier with persistence. There will be challenges and setbacks when learning, but a good attitude towards learning involves being persistent and not giving up when things get difficult.

Listen to and be open to feedback

The Instruction is given to help you improve your riding skills, this means the Instructor will give you feedback on areas where you can improve. Listen carefully to the feedback and be open to it. It may sound strange to do something new, but the instruction is there to develop you over a period of time.

Be open to the feedback and try to input the changes required from visual assessment from the trainer. You will improve after time and practise if it does not come naturally straight away. In most cases, it takes time and more training to perfect a skill.

Feedback is what is communicated with you after you have been observed trying different exercises. Don’t be defensive or dismissive of constructive criticism, it is there for your own development and improvement.

Stay positive

A positive mindset can make a big difference when learning a new skill. Focusing on the progress you’ve made and the possibilities ahead can help motivate you to keep going.

Learning to ride a motorcycle can be very challenging indeed, but it’s important to stay positive and focused on your goals. If you have it in your mind that you want to do it, with a bit of practise and positive thinking, you will achieve it.

Don’t let setbacks or mistakes discourage you or lead you to give up, but instead use them as opportunities to learn and grow. Every master was once a novice rider and had to learn new skills and develop over time.

It is a common fact that it takes 10,000 hours of constantly doing something to become a master.

Be patient

Learning to ride a motorcycle takes time and practice, so it’s important to be patient with yourself and the learning process. Don’t rush or try to do too much too soon, instead take your time and focus on building your skills gradually.

Don’t expect to become an expert after an hour or two or even overnight. But certainly don’t get frustrated with yourself or your progress, however slow you think it is going.

It takes time, practice, and patience when you embark on learning a new skill. When the foundations are set properly and the muscle memory is in place, riding a motorcycle becomes much easier. You need to be willing to put in the effort and understand that progress may be slow at times.

Another famous saying is, Rome was not built in a day!

Respect other road users

As a new or learner rider, you may feel nervous or uncertain on the road, but it’s still important to remain respectful to other road users. This means following the rules of the road by knowing the highway code, signalling clearly and being aware of what other road users are doing around you.

A good attitude involves respecting other motorcycle riders, car drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Always be courteous and allow more time for your journey, especially in inclement weather.

To summarise

Overall, demonstrating a good attitude towards learning to ride a motorcycle involves being open to feedback, staying positive and taking responsibility for your own learning.

You will need to respect other road users, as they are bigger than you and size does matter on the road. Always be prepared to give way, even if you have the right of way. Being patient with the learning process is imperative to your progress and by learning slowly, you set better skills.

By adopting these habits and attitudes, as a learner rider you will become a safe and confident rider on the road. Overall, having a good attitude towards learning a new skill involves being open, patient, persistent and responsible by having a positive mindset.

By approaching learning with this attitude, you’ll be more likely to make progress and achieve your end goal.
