WHERE TO STOP

To assess normal stop position, the examiner will ask you to pull over and stop several times during the Module Two motorcycle test.

A key part of the instruction will be to stop in a safe place on the left hand side of the road.

Once you are asked to pull over and stop by the side of the road, you should not feel pressured to stop straight away.

Ideally, you should pull over on a straight section of the road, but not close to or opposite a junction or bus stop.

SIGNAL YOUR INTENTION

Bends should also be avoided unless the examiner has specifically asked you to stop there, as should the base or brow of a hill.

You must also avoid stopping where you would block driveways, loading and unloading areas, entrances to car parks and roads marked with yellow or red painted lines.

Once you have been told to pull over in a safe place, you should start planning where to stop straight away.

It may be some time ahead before you locate a safe place, but once you know where you want to stop, you can apply a signal to let the examiner and other road users know your intention.

PLANNING IS KEY

Plan your route to the safe place where you want to stop, move into position first and then slow down using your brakes and gears.

If for any reason you are not happy to stop, you can abort the manoeuvre and find an alternative location to stop.

You must remember that an instruction to stop will always be followed by an instruction to pull away.

Don’t pull out in front of other traffic because you are in a rush to do as you have been asked.

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER - Normal stop position

  • Stop on a straight road
  • Do not stop opposite hazards
  • Stop well away from junctions
  • Stop where there is a raised kerb
  • Only pull over and stop when safe to do so
  • Avoid the brow or base of a hill
  • Think ahead and about pulling away
