Limit Point (Vanishing Point)

Why Limit Points Matter

The limit point is one of the most valuable tools available to an advanced rider when approaching and negotiating bends. It provides a continuous, real-time reference for judging safe speed and understanding what the road is doing ahead.

It is not the only tool, but it is one of the most reliable. The limit point is the furthest point along the road that you can see before your view is restricted. In simple terms, it is where the road appears to disappear from view. By observing how this point behaves, a rider can make informed decisions about speed, positioning and overall control.

This directly supports the fundamental principle of advanced riding:

  1. You should always be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear.
  2. Understanding and applying this consistently is what turns observation into control.

Limit Point as a Decision-Making Tool

The true value of the limit point lies in what it tells you, not simply in identifying it. As you approach and move through a bend, the behaviour of the limit point provides continuous feedback.

If the limit point begins to move away from you, it indicates that your view is opening and the bend is either easing or straightening. This supports maintaining or gently increasing speed where appropriate.

If the limit point remains at a constant distance, it suggests that your current speed is matched to the bend or corner and you should keep the bike stable and as it is.

If the limit point starts to appear like it is coming towards you, it is a clear indication that your speed is too high for the available view and needs to be reduced.

This is not theory. It is a practical, usable system that allows you to judge speed based on what you can actually see, rather than what you assume is ahead.

Linking Limit Points to a Structured Approach

The use of limit points sits firmly within the Information phase of IPSGA, influencing both Speed and Position.

As you gather information, the limit point becomes one of the key references that shapes your plan during cornering. It helps you decide how much to reduce speed on approach, how to position for the best view and when it is safe to apply acceleration again.

This is where it connects directly to the work covered in the bends section. The limit point informs the decision. The rider then applies that decision through positioning, speed control and throttle use.

Without this understanding, cornering becomes guesswork. With it, the rider gains clarity and consistency.

Getting Speed Right Before the Bend

A key principle in advanced riding is that speed should be correct before entering the bend.

If you find yourself needing to brake while already committed to the bend, it is often an indication that the approach speed was too high. This can unsettle the motorcycle, reduce grip and limit your options.

Using the limit point properly allows you to set an appropriate speed early, so that the motorcycle remains stable and balanced as you enter and progress through the bend.

This creates time to think, space to adjust and a much smoother overall ride. It also helps you to maintain good forward vision throughout the bend.

Developing the Skill

Understanding the limit point is one thing. Applying it consistently is another.

One of the most effective ways to develop this skill is to ride a familiar route at a slightly reduced speed and focus specifically on how the limit point behaves. Reducing speed increases thinking time, allowing you to observe, interpret and respond more accurately.

Over time, this builds confidence and improves your ability to judge bends more precisely.

This is not about riding slowly. It is about developing clarity before increasing pace, speed is a byproduct of perfecting a technique properly.

Common Faults Riders Make

There are several common issues that prevent riders from using limit points effectively. Many of the issues riders have come from riding faster than you are comfortable.

Not Looking Far Enough Ahead

Many riders focus too close to the front of the motorcycle, missing the information that the limit point provides further ahead. Excess speed is a common fault.

Misreading the Limit Point

Failing to recognise when the limit point is coming towards them often leads to entering bends too quickly. This could be cognitive overload, where the rider has too many things to think about at once.

Ignoring the Information Provided

Some riders see the limit point but do not act on it, continuing at a speed that is not supported by the available view.

Each of these faults reduces the rider’s ability to plan and control the motorcycle effectively.

Limit Points and Positioning

While this is not a positioning article, it is important to recognise that limit points influence where you place the motorcycle on the road.

Positioning for safety, stability and view is often adjusted to improve the rider’s ability to see the limit point clearly and early. A better view allows earlier decisions, which in turn supports smoother riding.

The principle remains the same. The better the view, the better the plan.

Focus for Your Next Ride

On your next ride, begin to actively use the limit point and ask yourself:

  1. Am I identifying the limit point early enough?
  2. Am I adjusting my speed based on what the limit point is telling me?
  3. Am I entering bends at a speed that allows me to remain stable and in control?
  4. Am I looking far enough ahead to make informed decisions?
  5. Am I using the limit point to support my planning, or am I guessing?

Developing your use of the limit point will give you a clearer understanding of the road ahead, improve your planning and allow you to ride with greater confidence and control.
